Planning Your Christmas – 2023

Planning Your Christmas – 2023

Are you ready for the holidays?  From about this time in mid November- Christmas Day is my favorite time of year! As much as I love the evenings spent in front of the fire watching a christmas movie while sipping hot chocolate even I can’t deny that this is also a very busy time of year. Between an uptick in activities, to more baking than normal, not to mention gifts to buy and wrap this time of year can easily spiral from being the most wonderful time of year, to being the most stressful! In this post I am sharing several things you can start planning and doing now to make this time of year a little less stressful!

Activities

What activities do you want to do this year? Are there music performances, light shows, other events that you want to go to? Now is the time to take a look at your calendar and start purchasing tickets- things tend to sell out pretty quickly so secure your fun now!

Cooking

Do you host a lot during the holidays? You might start collecting a few extra ingredients to have on hand, and again help ease your budget later. If you mind yourself with a little bit of extra time on your hands you might also whip up an additional casserole or two and stick them in the freezer- anything you can do now, so that later you can enjoy the holidays, I would advise doing!

Baking

As you’ve no doubt heard me mention, my grandma always made peanut brittle, fudge, and other baked goods throughout the holiday season. I have noticed that, while some people have no desire to bake there tends largely to be 2 groups of people: those who do a ton of baking at the holidays and those who wish they did more.

I always find myself wanting to bake, but I usually make myself wait, or hold back until…? I’m not sure what I am always waiting for! If you want to try out some new Christmas cookies this year, go ahead and get started now- you can freeze the cookies and just pull out what you need when you need them.

When my family got the flu a few days before Christmas last year, I was glad that I had made some cookies and frozen them ahead of time, that way when we were feeling better and still had a few parties to attend I had cookies at the ready! And yes- they still tasted good. I had people asking for the recipe!

Tip: Try using a vacuum sealer for an airtight seal on your cookies, and watch closely- you want the seal to be tight but stop just before the cookies look like they will get stress fractures in front of the sealing!

Shopping

I love attending craft shows and try to keep my eye open for gifts throughout the year, however there are still gifts that I purchase for people outside of craft shows. If you are someone who buys books, for example, or other items like that for people, go ahead and start purchasing one or two of these gifts now! It will be easier on your budget and one less thing to do later!

Wrapping

I love wrapping gifts while sipping hot chocolate in front of a warm fire, while watching a christmas movie- this is one of our favorite things! I always want to leave some wrapping for later, there are things that can be wrapped or even just boxed ahead of time. Boxing ahead of time might also be a good idea for those of you who have snoops living in your house!

Decor

No, alas I am not going to tell you to pull out your decorations and start decorating for christmas at the beginning of november…. But you might pull them out and look through them! This is the perfect time of year to collect ideas, make lists, and see if you have any holes in your decor, or any specific additions. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Do you say every year that you need something? Another garland? An extra small tree, or a new wreath for your front door?

Do you have a stocking for everyone in your family?

Do you like your Christmas color scheme or are you wanting to switch it up a little this year?

Think about your decor from last year and make a list of anything you might want to change! Also if you look through your decor and see anything that you’re not excited to put up this year, time to give it to someone who will!

Outside Decorating

Do you put Christmas lights up outside of your house? If you haven’t yet, now is a great time to pull out the lights and make sure that they are all working! If there are any new items you want to add- time to make a list!

I hope these tips help to get you thinking and preparing ahead for the holidays. Christmas is my favorite time of year and I hate to see people so frazzled that they can’t enjoy themselves! Here’s to having a very merry Christmas in 2023!

Fall Centerpiece and Vignette Ideas for 2023

Fall Centerpiece and Vignette Ideas for 2023

In my last home making post we covered some home making trends; but what if you are still stalled on ideas of how to create your own fall vignettes? What about if you aren’t an orange person- what about neutral decorating ideas? In this post I am sharing several decorating ideas of how you can create neutral vignettes and centerpieces.

Color Palettes

You all know I love a good color palette and in my post Fall Decor Trends and Decorating Ideas for 2023
I shared a few sample color palettes for some of the bold colors that are on trend this year.

Try using a color palette of:

Black, White, Cream, Gray and Beige

Cream, Light Sage Green, White, Dark Green, Light Gray

Dark Brown, Amber, Cream, Wheat, Sage

Things to remember when creating a vignette:

  • Bring a sense of cohesiveness
  • Vary heights
  • Vary textures
  • Use an odd number

 A sense of cohesiveness

fall centerpiece

Like the amber bottles in the picture above you want to make sure you have some through line or something that brings the elements together. If you have a bunch of plants, are they all in similar color or material pots? If you have picture frames, are they similar at all? Wooden or brown frames? Coordinating one or two elements from your vignette will help pull it all together.

Use an Odd Number of Items

Generally using 3-5 items, or collection of items that read as one item,  in a vignette is a safe rule of thumb. If you are using books and then set a candle on top of them that will usually read as one item.

Vary the Height

Kitchen fall vignette with teal accents

You want your vignette or centerpiece to look like a picture or landscape- you want peaks and valleys as well as flat connectors.  In this vignette; I have the teal color to act as a through line connecting the different elements. The wood of the picture frame blends with the wood of the tray. The little plant adds organic life to the vignette, and a small blue pottery tray in the front of the vignette acts as a small bridge to let the eye rest as it takes in the whole vignette.

Vary the Texture

Use a variety of textures- you don’t want everything to be super smooth or very rough. You want it to be a nice variety for your eye to take in.

Ideas

Try creating a vignette using different levels of pillar candles or candle sticks in front of a mirror or painting to create a vignette.

Use something out of the ordinary to corral your vignette like an old suitcase or briefcase instead of a tray!

Utilize boring spaces

vignette varying height

Maybe you have an end table without much going on on it. I have one really narrow end table that I can’t fit a whole lot on, but still the space is just begging to be used in some small way. I used a pillar candlestick with a pumpkin and vintage books to make a little vignette and I love it!

Other Items to Add

Here is a list of items that always are great to include in a fall vignette:

  • Pinecones
  • Deer antlers
  • A candle
  • Vintage books
  • Something organic (like a small plant)
  • An old picture
  • A pumpkin or gourd
  • Dried  Botanicals

I hope this helps to get you started creating your own beautiful vignettes and centerpieces to enjoy this fall! If you don’t already, be sure to follow me on pinterest @essentiallyemmamarie for daily inspiration!

Fall Decor Trends and Decorating Ideas for 2023

Fall Decor Trends and Decorating Ideas for 2023

Are you ready for fall? While I am not quite ready to concede to fall and pull out the fall decor I am ready to start thinking about it! In This post I am sharing a few fall decorating trends that are popular this year as well as a few ideas to get your fall decorating mind going!

Colors

You know me- I love talking colors! This year the floor is pretty open for color in your fall decor! While whites, and neutrals are still hanging around this fall we are seeing greens brought back in ranging in shades from lighter eucalyptus green, to deep saturated pine green.

We are also seeing rusts and oranges, and really deep saturated reddish/brown- especially pairing with deep green for contrast.

A new addition I’ve seen added to the fall color palette this year is gray! I love the pairing of gray into the traditional fall color palette!

Sample Color Palettes

Like I mentioned above anything goes in the world of fall color this year but I am especially loving these color palettes:

Saturated: deep green, mustard green, rich earth brown, with other shades of green and browns and mixed in.

Cream, white and burnt orange, accented with soft beiges and greens

Deep forest green, dark denim blue, and rich gold, with accents of browns and golds.

Browns, greens, creams, and white

Texture

Texture should be part of your decor all year round- but especially in the fall! Burlap is still hot, as are: jute, wicker, pampas grass, dried wheat, woven textiles, and wood.

Natural Elements

Think branches, pinecones, acorns, Lion’s head seed pods- anything natural that can be dried and try incorporating that into your decor!

Landscapes

Vintage looking landscapes are hot right now as something you can incorporate into your decor. Fall is a great time to add them in! Not only are we seeing landscapes in the form of painting, but we are also seeing landscapes and botanical prints introduced for throw pillows too!

Botanicals

Dried flowers and other botanicals are always a great addition to your decor. This year I am mixing creams and whites with burnt orange in my botanicals that I am incorporating into my fall decor!

Wheat, papas grass, dried flowers and feathers- if you have some show them off!

Gourds

Now I would never tell part of God’s creation that they are out of style and just have to sit on the sidelines for the foreseeable future; but I would tell you if some of them were more popular in a given year than in another;)

This year I am seeing gourds in lots of places! A few years ago white pumpkins were all the rage, and they are still in, but this year sprinkle a few cute gourds throughout your decor: added to a vignette, topping a small stack of books, or in a bowl!

Wreaths

While a simple less is more wreath, will always hold its own; larger wreaths with a bit more going on are on trend this fall!

I hope this post serves to inspire you and get you excited for fall. It’s sad to see summer go, but fall is a great season too!

How to Make Your Home Look Uncluttered- Without Decluttering!

How to Make Your Home Look Uncluttered- Without Decluttering!

I have talked before about decluttering your home and different ways to approach decluttering (see my posts) but I’m today’s post I am talking about several areas which, by tidying up, can make your home look less cluttered!

Entryway:

First impressions are lasting impressions! Be sure that the entryway that guests use to enter your house isn’t messy!

Shoes:

Whether or not you insist on guests taking their shoes off when they enter the house, I know very few houses that don’t have shoes by the front door. There are many nice benches that have pull out storage, or try having a tray or a basket for shoes is also a way to corral your shoes if your entry is tight on space!

Mail:

I am always shocked at how many people complain about mail piling up in their entryway- who have a cute little tray labeled “Mail” sitting in their entry. If you don’t want to collect mail in your entryway- don’t put a spot for mail there!

Counters:

Your  kitchen counter – is one area people notice when they walk into your home. Even if you have stuff in the rest of your home if you clear your kitchen counter it will give your home an open airy feel!

How to do this?

Do you have canisters on your counter? Try only keeping out one or two (like the flour and sugar), try keeping canisters in the cupboard, or even eliminating them all together!

By keeping only the things you actually use out on your counter. For us this looks like; our coffee maker, coffee canister and a small thing of sugar, (insert affiliate link for coffee maker), and a tray corralling a cutting board, a hot plate and salt and pepper- ok I have a few extras on here but not too many! 😉

Paperwork and Mail:

The main thing is with mail- do not bring it in and set it on the counter!! Go over to your trash or better yet, your recycling bin, and immediately sort through your mail upon entering the house. Any mail for any other member of the family place in locations where they will see it!!

Having piles of paper, and mail is a definite way to make your house look cluttered. In your living room you could place a magazine rack to neatly hold any current magazines- just purge periodically so it doesn’t become a dumping ground!

Squirrel it Away:

There are some things that are hard to eliminate completely; so if you can’t beat it- hide it! Having a beautiful box on your desk is also a good place to get mail out of sight.

You can also sneak twist ties, rubber bands and other such items in a cute pitcher in your kitchen. This keeps your area looking clean- and keeps your item within easy reach!

This can make your home look less cluttered without decluttering!

Books:

I can’t talk too much in this area- books are one area where I seem to be blind to clutter!  I can even admit that no, I am not in fact reading all 8 of those books, 4 magazines, and the book on my tablet at the same time. Look around your surfaces and see if you have several books that need to be reshelved  for a different time!

Wires and Cords:

Having a mess of wires instantly junks up your home- not listen cords are a part of modern life- I get that! But that huge tangle by your tv? Ugg. one idea is to place a command hook behind your tv stand and hook your cords on there. If you have wires from lights, try to tuck them under or behind furniture, and if nothing else, use a tie and loop up the extra length of wire you then at least you don’t have an extra 4 feet of cord lying around!

Bathrooms

Counter:

Bathrooms are notorious for being dumping grounds for more bottles, sprays and lotions than I can count. Try keeping as much of these as possible in storage under the sink. If you don’t have room in under sink storage- try decluttering for real- but if you are still short on space then coral loose items on a tray- a tray really does help the space to look neater!

Other Storage:

I’m sure you wouldn’t do this but please- don’t just sit extra rolls of toilet paper on the back of your toilet! Get a cute basket and sit the rolls in the basket on the back of your toilet, or if space allows, install some shelving above your toilet.

Open shelving is the most updated look, but you can also try hanging a cabinet above your toilet as well.

You can then use this storage for toilet paper, towels, tissues, and whatever else you are needing to store!

I hope these tips give you some ideas of ways you can quickly and easily make your home feel more curated, and help you feel less stressed! Know anyone else who might enjoy these tips? Please share this post with a friend- that is how this blog grows and helps me to keep bringing you posts like this one! Thanks!

How to Achieve Your Signature Style

How to Achieve Your Signature Style

If you have been following along (and if you haven’t I suggest you check out how Creating Your Signature Decor Style, Part 1, and The Importance of Defining Your Signature Style, Part 2) then you have read and followed some of the steps my two previous posts and are ready for Part 3.  In Part 1, we discuss how to identify what decor elements inspire you. In Part 2, we discuss why giving your style a name is so important, and how it can save you time and money, and now we are ready for Part 3, Achieving Your Signature Style.

How to Achieve Your Signature Style

Now it’s time to put everything we have talked about into practice—this is the fun part! But before you start putting on your shoes to rush out and go shopping, let’s pause for a minute: What did you discover about your signature style? Did anything about it surprise you? Did you take time to notice what elements or pieces in your home are your favorite?

For myself, I have found that my favorite pieces are the collected ones—the pieces handed down from family and friends. It’s the art from arts festivals and crafts shows I’ve visited. It’s the unique items from crafts shows and yard sales, flea markets and antique stores that have all come together to create a style that I love, and that also feels like me. It has taken time and it will take more time to further curate my style. Along the way I’m sure my style will change, and as life evolves in our household (decorating is a tad different with a toddler!), certain decor elements will change also.

When we moved into our house six years ago, I desperately wanted our home to be cute, curated, and comfortable. It was none of these things for the first few years. Over the years it has slowly come to look like what I originally envisioned when we first laid eyes on it. It took time—I wanted to rush it, but you really can’t rush the collection of items that reflect your style if you just rush out to Home Goods (yes, I do love that store) or Pottery Barn.

Not long after we moved into our home, my mother wanted to get rid of the piano they had. I had taken lessons while growing up, and really liked the five foot tall, slightly battered upright piano from the early 20th century. I begged her not to get rid of it and instead to let us have it. We were barely settled into our home when the piano movers were scheduled and the piano was delivered. Something really neat happened as soon as that piano arrived. My house started to feel like a home. There was something in my home that instantly felt like me, that had memories attached to it, and had a sense of heritage to it that is so important to me. I knew right away I wanted more items like this in my home.

The other thing I learned along the way is that if I want my home to have unique things collected from craft shows, or vintage markets, then I have to go to vintage markets and crafts shows in order to stumble across these items.

How Does this Look Actionably?

The first thing to do is to go through your home and curate it. Pull out, take down, and gather everything you’re not absolutely in love with. Gather up all the items in vignettes that you feel aren’t quite working. Let your house rest.

Myquillyn Smith, author of “The Nesting Place,” and “Cozy Minimalist Home,” talks about quieting your home. She goes really far with this, even taking out furniture that you aren’t using very often. Then you wait. Live in your home for a little while, and see what you miss.

As you notice that you are starting to miss something, pull it back out and put it on display. What items are you holding onto that could go? Just because someone gave you something doesn’t mean you are obligated to keep it forever—especially if you don’t love it!

If you come across things that you love but need something to make it work, make a list! Maybe you have a gorgeous pot but no plant; maybe you have a piece of art for which you need a frame—make a list. Then start keeping your eyes open for the right item to fill these gaps—remember, don’t rush! No one is going to judge you for taking a little longer to find the right piece that speaks to you just in order to fill a decor gap.

Put Yourself Out There!

When you get a sense of the items you are missing, maybe a large piece of art, or a comfortable chair, make an effort to visit places that might just have what you are looking for. If you like craft shows, go to craft shows! If you like vintage, go to flea markets and antique malls.

Above all, be patient! Just because you don’t stumble across the perfect thing doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!

I hope this little series has been enlightening and given you actionable steps to clarify and curate your decorating style and to create a home you love! Remember, if you have found this post helpful, the kindest thing you can do is to share this post with someone you know—this helps me to be able to continue creating these posts for you and your friend will be touched that you thought of them! Thanks in advance!

The Importance of Defining Your Signature Style – Part 2

The Importance of Defining Your Signature Style – Part 2

In the last Homemaking post I shared how to find your signature style, (see that post here) and this post we are talking about the importance of defining our signature style. Why does defining your signature style even matter?? Why should you go through these exercises?

The reason to take time to find what styles, colors, and textures speak to you is so that you can create a home that inspires you and makes you come alive.

By doing these things you can create a curated home that looks like you and your style.

As to why you should define your style it is simple; if you never put a some sort of label on your decor style (you can make up a style name- we will talk about that in a minute) then you never have a guide for what makes the cut to bring into your home and what doesn’t. If you don’t have any sort of guide then your home will fail to look cohesive and curated.

Naming Your Decor Style

If you went through Pinterest you probably saw a wide range of styles including:

  • Farmhouse; shiplap, chippy furniture, galvanized metal
  • Classic; Timeless elements, sleek lines
  • Maximalist; lots and lots of color, patterns, and lots of stuff!
  • Bohemian; earthy tones and textures, woven materials, plants!!
  • Midcentury; 1950s-1960s inspired furniture, often shades of pea green, yellow, blue and red.
  • Modern; somewhat minimal, very streamlined look.
  • Industrial; exposed brick walls, metal, less upholstered materials.
  • Grandmillenial; antique store meets grandma’s house, more of a feminine feel. Lots of florals.

Now a thoughtfully decorated home should be a mix of your favorite parts of these styles; for example: I like elements of Bohemian Style, but it’s not my most favorite look, however I love the life all the plants that Boho style is known for, gives to a home. So I draw some inspiration from this style when it comes to my plant life in my house.

How Do You Decide?

That is why Part 1- Finding Your Signature Decor Style was so important! What are the elements of these styles that make you come alive!

For me, my signature style favorite elements include:

  • Classic elements; I always want my home to have a timeless look.
  • Vintage pieces
  • Pops of color
  • Art collected from craft shows and arts festivals.

These elements all come together in a style I have named; Artsy Vintage Classic.

I could have also called it a hint of grandmillenial vintage with a modern twist. Despite what I actually name the end result is that I have a guideline for what my style is, and what comes into my home. When a friend was getting rid of their mid century buffet (originally from the 1960s) I could look at it and know that this mid century piece would fit in with other vintage pieces I have and work in my home. When I am at home goods and see a very modern piece of art that I like, I can assess if it fits into my home, and whenI decide that while I like it, I don’t love it, and it is a little modern for my style, then it stays in the store and just I come home!

Now if you, or I, see a piece we absolutely love, that makes our heart flutter and our palms get sweaty, but isn’t quite like the rest of the items in our home should we buy it? Yes!! If you love it, really love it, then there will be a way to make it work in your home.

That is part of the beauty of bringing only pieces that you really love into your home; your signature look comes to light because you are creating it out of pieces you really love and themes will emerge.

By taking the time to go through these steps; identifying and naming your decor style you will create a curated home that will always possess a timeless feel!
